The United Nations General Assembly designated 11 December "International Mountain Day (IMD) in 2004." The main goal of the IMD celebration is to raise an awareness about the importance of mountain ecosystems and livelihoods among the global communities. The Mountain Partnership, a United Nations coalition of global institutions, is the main organization that promotes the sustainable mountain development (SMD) agenda.
Utah Valley University (UVU) as member of the Mountain Partnership and the Utah International
Mountain Forum (UIMF), a coalition of student clubs at UVU, have celebrated International
Mountain Day every year since 2010. They started to celebrate IMD jointly with other
MP members in North America interested in SMD advocacy since 2012. As an Associate
Member of the Department of Public Information at the United Nations, UVU, via affiliated
organizations working under the banner of UVUN, work to promote the 17 Sustainable Development Goals across UVU and the wider community.
