International Mountain Day

Utah Valley University and the University of Utah

The United Nations General Assembly designated 11 December “International Mountain Day (IMD).” It has been observed for the first time in 2004 under the umbrella of the Mountain Partnership, a United Nations coalition of global institutions interested in promotion of the United Nations sustainable mountain development (SMD) agenda. The main goal of the IMD celebration is to raise an awareness about the importance of mountain ecosystems and livelihoods among the global communities.

Utah Valley University (UVU) as member of the Mountain Partnership and the Utah International Mountain Forum (UIMF), a coalition of student clubs at UVU celebrate International Mountain Day every year since 2010. They started to celebrate IMD jointly with other MP members in North America interested in SMD advocacy since 2012.

Promoting the SMD Agenda across the state of Utah has been an integral part of our efforts. In 2016 we will again be collaborating with the University of Utah. The core theme of 2016 International Mountain Day celebration is Mountain Cultures: celebrating diversity and strengthening identity.
